Cally’s Teas has a new location at 10151 Whyte Avenue (just east of the new Roots on Whyte) with a new shop and tea café opening soon. “We’re going to focus on full-fat and decadent. We’ll start with a simple menu — scones, a home-made bread, savoury tarts and salad at lunch, and in the afternoon, cream tea,” says Cally Slater-Dowson. Cally’s will continue the tea culture theme in giftware and teas for sale as well. We’re thrilled to see Cally back with an expanded retail shop, and a lovely place for tea.

We’ve had a sneak peek at Kitchen by Brad Smoliak and it’s gorgeous! The space will be available for cooking classes, wine nights, dinners and small events by mid-March. For bookings, visit the website.

We’re happy to follow Jennifer Ogle, formerly of Leva, to her new place, Under the High Wheel (Roots on Whyte Building). Chef Ogle is an excellent cook and flavour maven and we can’t wait to taste her delish food again.

Winefest Edmonton is back! The all-wine event, February 17-18, features red and whites, port, sparkling and dessert wines from the world’s most celebrated wine regions. Edmonton hosts the Slow Food Canada National Meeting May 3-6. Of note to local foodies; two events are open to all; the Rural Tour on Thursday May 2, and the Roots, Shoots and Garden Boots Gala on May 5. (Sounds like a good time— who doesn’t want to go to a gala where you are encouraged to wear your gardening boots? Multi-courses with beverage pairings will be prepared by several local chefs headed by Paul Shufelt of Lux and Blair Lebsack of Range Rd. $155 inclusive, proceeds to Slow Food Canada. Looking for a terrific spot for weekend brunch? The Blue Chair (9624 76 Avenue, 780-989-2861) offers great music, real hollandaise sauce, delish bacon and the best pancakes in town. Saturday mornings also feature the brunch menu sans tunes. Friday and Saturday music nights still rock with the right talent, and they will be selling tickets.
